Embracing my Kinky Hair

I recently decided to comb out my locs, and was able to complete the process within a three week period.

I absolutely loved my locs!!  And will miss them.  But they were starting to get very thin at the roots and my hair was breaking off.  I tried just about every thing I could do to repair the thinned out roots, but nothing worked.

So I had to make choice to let go of my locs and transition back to my kinky curly hair. I've had my locs for a decade, so I now have to get use to a whole new texture of hair all over again.

After removing my locs and washing my hair, I saw what a great texture my hair was. So I am excited about being able to try new styles.  One thing I did notice was that my hair has major shrinkage.  So I may try to experiment with stretching my hair without heat.  The style in the photos with my short hair is a twist out.  If you want to know more about combing out locs, check out these videos on youtube.

I will say that I have always loved locs.  Although I was not able to keep them for life as I had hope, I will continue to share and promote the beauty of locs and all natural hair styles & hair types.

Naptural's Traveling With Natural Hair Video

"This video was inspired by all the traveling I did last month! There were a lot of events, so I had to be prepared for any natural hair disasters I might come across! I've made some mistakes along the way, but I learned some great tips on how to organize my luggage and what to pack for my natural hair, as well as how to wear my hair to the airport! I hope this helps you pack for your next vacation or big event!" -  Naptural85

My First Locs Hair Cut

I finally got the hair cut that I have wanted for almost a year now.  I hesitated in cutting my hair because I had worked so hard at caring for it so I cold reach a healthy long length.  But I learned that having long hair can be overrated. I loved the way it looked. But my hair became very heavy, hard to style and was always in the way.   After my hair cut, I felt so much lighter. It was a great feeling.

The good thing about my being open to cutting my hair, is not only is it a bit of a fresh beginning. But I can have fun styling it in more ways, with out it giving me a headache (old length was heavy).

Next!  Hoping to play with some color.  Updates soon.   Any one else thinking of making a change with their natural hair - color, length or style?

Traeh's Big Chop

"In [the video below], I will be showing you a portion of my journey from relaxed hair to natural hair. I did my big chop January 28th, 2014. I've been transitioning since Summer 13' (not sure of the exact date). Initially I was going to transition but I got tired of having thin relaxed hair and trying to deal with two textures so I just decided to do my big chop. I am also on a no heat journey so that I can improve the overall health of my hair. I hope my journey inspires you to go natural whether you decide to transition or do the big chop. In my experience, I believe the big chop was the best thing for me to do. The only regret I have is that I wish I did my big chop sooner :)"  ~ Traeh

Achieving the Perfect Twist Out

Would you just look at that twist out! Like most of you, my curls dont define themselves or match each
other perfectly, but thats okay! Here youll learn to you do the most beautiful twist out that you have ever seen!

Step One Begin by thoroughly rinsing and shampooing your hair. Try to use a sulfate-free shampoo to gently cleanse your curls without stripping them of their natural oils. After that, add a generous amount of  conditioner and begin finger detangling.

Step Two After you've detangled, let the conditioner condition the hair for as long as needed, then rinse and begin the actual style.

Step Three Section the hair into manageable sections (four to eight different sections, depending on the thickness and length of the hair) and clip all but one section of hair out of the way. Use a leave in conditioner of your choice, distribute it evenly throughout your hair. And lastly and an oil based product on top of that for hold.

Step Four Start twisting that hair! You can use a wide tooth comb to part off neat sections or you can just grab at random and twist. I find that parting with a comb is better when you plan on wearing the twists as a style while pitch-parting (no parts) makes for a better looking twist out.

Step Five Continue two strand twisting all of the hair. Make sure that you twist the hair in direction that you want it to fall. Decide where you want your part to be and twist accordingly!

Step Six Let your twists dry completely before you remove them! You have two options here, you can remove them once they've dried (which should take less than twenty-four hours) for a crisp, more elongated twist out or you can wait several days (like I typically do) for a twist out with a deeper, more defined curl.

TIP! Once you've removed the twists, you have the choice of separating the curls for big hair or just wearing it more defined as pictured above. The choice is yours! Now get out there and enjoy your beautiful hair! I hope you found this helpful!

Meet Amy Maxine

Q: What is your hair story?  What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A: For the majority of my teenage years I used to texture my hair which would loosen my curl pattern without making it dead straight however my hair started to form a straight, kinky, straight, kinky pattern so I decided to grow out my natural hair. However I still used to straighten my hair a lot ! almost everyday which in hindsight was probably why it never grew for years..... The most daring thing I've done is shave the side of my hair off a couple of years ago but decided to grow it back when I went natural .

Q: When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A: I decided to go natural April 2012 so its been about a year and a half now, my hair was dry lifeless, color damaged and the curl pattern was completely ruined. In my eyes it was officially time to accept a part of me that I had been denying all my life. My hair.

Q: Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A: I was very self conscious about the size and length of my hair because it is extremely thick but I now love it
and I honestly think the bigger the better .

Q: What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?

A: The first is Eco styler gel the Argan oil one is seriously the best product in the world. I take it everywhere with me just in-case  because my hair is so thick I can get a lot of frizz which i don't mind but I like my curls to be somewhat defined as well. Secondly another product I love is Shea moisture restorative conditioner which I use after cleansing my hair and it moisturizes it really well. Lastly I'd have to choose olive oil because it makes my hair really soft!

Q: What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A: I would say DO IT! Learning to accept yourself  fully is such an important part of self development,  we have to let go of the fear that holds us back from being ourselves and embrace who we are. Going natural is one of the best things I've done in terms of boosting my confidence and banishing insecurities.

Q: How can we keep up with you and your journey?
A:  I've recently entered the world of bloging and youtube. I've started a hair and style channel ...
Youtube: amymaxine and Blog: amymaxine.blogspot.comTwitter: @AmyMaxineM. I also have a health and positivity channel and blog - Youtube: thehealthchakra  and Blog: thehealthchakra.blogspot.com.

Aevin Dugas - Holds record for the biggest Afro

A link to this story was just shared with me today. It is about Aevin Dugas who has the world record for the largest Afro.

"Aevin Dugas of New Orleans, Louisiana holds the Guinness World Record for largest natural afro entering the book with an astounding 4 foot 4 inch circumference. Ms. Dugas afro is larger than a disco ball and Guinness says that its so sizable that she could fit the worlds shortest man inside her hairstyle. The 38-year-old social worker has grown her hair for over 14 years and credits her mother as her first inspiration to go natural saying, My mom has this picture of her with an afro before I was born, and I thought it was such a cute picture. I was like, Ooh, when I go natural, I want to wear my hair like my mom.

But at one time Aevin wished for bone straight hair and got perms which resulted in chemical burns on her scalp. After that she swore off chemicals and went natural sporting the style she wears today. Aevin told the Daily Mail, I dont know why, but theres something very important to me about little girls appreciating my hair and then wanting to wear their hair the same. As proud as Aevin is of her luscious locks, she also concedes to the downsides of her crowing glory like difficulty with peripheral vision while driving, getting hooked in trees she passes, and getting caught in peoples drinks at clubs. The record holder explained, I dont wear it like this on an airplane because people would probably slap me, because it touches people. Ive had somebody want to beat me up at a concert, adding, So it can be kind of problematic, but I still wouldn't change a thing about it.
